Lebowakgomo, Limpopo – What began as a solemn gathering to bid farewell to a loved one has turned into a devastating tragedy after three mourners, including a seven-year-old girl, died following suspected food poisoning at a funeral in Ga-Maja, Mmotong wa Bogobe.

The incident, which unfolded between April 18 and 20, has sent shockwaves through the local community as dozens of attendees fell ill shortly after the funeral proceedings. According to authorities, mourners began experiencing severe symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhoea, raising alarm among families and healthcare workers.

Emergency response teams acted swiftly as the number of affected individuals grew. A total of 42 people sought medical attention at Lebowakgomo Hospital, with 38 patients admitted for further treatment. Health officials worked around the clock to stabilise those in critical condition, as concerns mounted over the scale of the outbreak.

Police have since opened inquest dockets to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths. South African Police Service spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with authorities consolidating multiple related cases to determine the source of the suspected contamination.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Thembi Hadebe expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the bereaved families. She urged the community to remain calm and allow investigators and medical experts to carry out their work.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families who have lost their loved ones during this tragic incident,” said Hadebe. “We appeal to the community to remain calm and allow the investigation to unfold, including the post-mortem processes, which will determine the exact cause of death.”

While the exact source of the suspected food poisoning has not yet been confirmed, public health officials are expected to examine food preparation, storage conditions, and possible contamination at the funeral gathering. The incident has also raised broader concerns about food safety practices at large community events, particularly in rural areas where catering conditions may not always meet health standards.

Community members remain anxious as they await answers, with many calling for stricter oversight and awareness around food handling during public gatherings. For now, families mourn not only the loss of loved ones but also the tragic circumstances that turned a moment of unity into one of grief.

Authorities have assured the public that a full investigation is underway and that accountability will follow once the cause of the outbreak is established.
