Teacher Found Dead in Mahikeng Home as Police Investigate Murder
A Mahikeng family is mourning the loss of a 39-year-old woman who was found dead inside her home in what police are investigating as a murder case.
The victim, identified as Masego Moshweu, was discovered in a locked bedroom at her residence in Lonely Park Village near Golfview, leaving relatives shocked and searching for answers.
According to family members, concerns were raised after repeated attempts to contact Moshweu went unanswered. A relative eventually went to her home to check on her wellbeing, only to make a tragic discovery.
North West police spokesperson Sipho Taliwe confirmed that officers were called to the scene at approximately 5:10 pm on Friday following a complaint related to domestic violence.
When police arrived, family members and Emergency Medical and Rescue Services personnel were already at the property. Paramedics subsequently declared the 39-year-old woman dead at the scene.
Police said a family member became concerned after failing to reach Moshweu and decided to visit her residence. Upon arrival, all doors and windows were reportedly locked.
After searching the property, the relative allegedly found a set of keys inside a vehicle parked in the yard. Using the keys, she managed to unlock the main entrance to the house but discovered that the bedroom door remained locked.
According to police, the relative eventually gained access to the room, where she found Moshweu lying motionless in a pool of blood.
The disturbing discovery has left the family devastated. One relative claimed that the victim may have been attacked with household tools, although police have not officially confirmed the nature of the weapon used.
The family member further alleged that the room appeared to have been locked after the incident and suggested that the perpetrator may have left the property afterwards. However, authorities have not yet confirmed these claims as investigations continue.
Police have revealed that Moshweu and her husband were reportedly involved in a confrontation earlier on the same day.
In a further development, authorities confirmed that the husband was later involved in a collision with a truck on Nelson Mandela Drive. He is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.
Investigators are working to establish the sequence of events that led to Moshweu’s death. At this stage, no arrests have been announced, and police have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation remains active.
Authorities have also warned against spreading unverified information on social media, stressing that only officially confirmed details should be shared.
The tragedy comes amid growing concerns about violent crime and domestic violence in the North West province.
Earlier this month, North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management Wessels Morweng and Provincial Police Commissioner Ryno Naidoo highlighted domestic violence, alcohol abuse, and substance abuse as some of the leading contributors to violent crime in the province.
According to provincial crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2025/26 financial year, arguments, misunderstandings, provocation, and road rage were among the most common factors linked to cases of murder, attempted murder, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
The report further revealed that alcohol-related incidents were associated with hundreds of violent crimes, including assaults, rapes, murders, and attempted murders over a three-month period.
Community members in Mahikeng have expressed shock over Moshweu’s death, with many describing her as a dedicated educator whose loss will be felt by family, colleagues, and learners alike.
As police continue their investigation, relatives hope that those responsible will be identified and brought to justice. For now, the family is left grieving the loss of a loved one while awaiting answers about the circumstances surrounding her death.
